For neat freaks there’s the included cable organizer in the left foot that allows you to easily route cables that come from your laptop. The free constrictions form means you can use the Logitech Alto Connect with any size laptops. The problem of cooling is also gone, as the bottom of your laptop is no constricted in any way, making contact with just a big ‘X’ shaped stand. Remember that you’ll need an external keyboard + mouse kit to use the raised laptop. The only problem I have with the Logitech Alto Connect is the lack of versatility as it can’t be adjusted in any way and can’t be used in bed or laying on a sofa.

The design is sober

It is easy to install the Logitech Alto Cordless stand because there’s no need to use a driver. It is as easy as you don’t need to read the user’s manual. All you have to do is to fix the stand in the work position, to connect it to the notebook through the USB plug and than to pair the stand with the keyboard. Alto will elevate your laptop display to the perfect viewing height which eliminates stress on the back and arms. Its wireless keyboard is easy to type and comfortable having a rubberized palm rest and silent keys. One of the Alto’s weak point could be that ports on the front of your notebook became inaccessible, but if you need USB ports for using a mouse, speakers or a printer there are three on the back side.

I use this laptop stand and I am pleased with it, even if it is not the best. It was great for my needs. I even use it when lying in bed with my laptop, but I had to turn it around 180 degrees, plus the laptop sits horizontally supported by the front edge of Logitech Alto Cordless. This setup offers the advantage of better cooling because of the airflow that goes beneath the laptop. It is not perfectly ergonomic because the screen isn’t elevated to your eyes level like when you use it on a desk, but at least your lap isn’t wormed up.

The screen is raised a good 5.5 inches off the desk surface and is also cooler better thanks to the fact there’s nothing to restrict the airflow there. Another advantage is that you can put anything you like under your laptop now, like books, an external harddrive, external laptop battery, a central speaker from a surround audio setup, pretty much anything that not taller than let’s say 5 inches.

All in all it’s a great stand to buy, especially if you’re concerned about aesthetics.

mStand during normal use

The mStand is made from a single piece of aluminum, that goes perfect with the latest unibody MacBooks. It has a simple shape, with the foot resembling the one on your iMac and a sloped part where the laptop will sit, hold only by a small vertical raised part. The mStand is good for 15 and 17 inch Macs but can also be used with any laptop with a depth no more than 265 mm (10.4 inches). I buess you could mount a bigger one but the overall balance will be compromised so do it on your own risk.

What I don’t understand is why on earth the bottom of the stand, that holds the laptop is not shaped in such a way to allow the air to flow beneath it. I know Macbooks have side ventilation holes but the bottom of the laptop still gets hot after prolonged use, plus if you’re planning on using the mStand with a non-Apple notebook you’ll have 99% chance to have ventilation holes on the bottom part. And I don’t believe the “aluminum acts like a large heatsink” saying. A cable organizer comes in handy allowing you to route cables in the back of the stand through a special hole shaped like the Apple logo.

As with any Apple accessory, the mStand doesn’t come cheap, but 48$ is not the end of the road. Remember that you’ll have to use a regular keyboard to type while your Macbook sits on the mStand, because the the laptop is raised too much from the ground to allow your hands to rest on the table.
