The first trick implies meddling with the power options and setting the profile designed to provide the longest lifespan of the accumulator even when it is connected to the A/C. The decrease in the performance of your laptop translates into a lower power usage for each of its components, which in turn will mean less emitted heat. Furthermore, the proverbial dust bunnies that tend to gather on the vent will prevent the laptop from eliminating the warm air inside. Therefore, you will need to ensure that exit vents are clean by either wiping them with a clean cloth or blowing them out with an air duster. At the same time, make sure that the vent’s path is not obstructed by any object.

Overheating laptops are less reliable

Lastly, if you do not want to experience a loss in performance associated with downgrading the power usage or your overheating issues are not related to the clogged vent, there is one more solution to try. However, it will involve purchasing a laptop cooler pad. Essentially, the cooler pads are devices powered via the USB of the laptop which are placed underneath it in order to assist in the transferring the heat away from your computer. Depending on how much heat you want to dissipate and the amount of money you can afford to invest in it, you will be able to purchase a fan cooler pad, a liquid cooler pad or a passive cooler pad.

In terms of design, we can notice the wave aspect (again, not a surprise, if you remember the F5L001 and F5L028) that allows air to circle the hot spots and cool them down, so nice looks that also improve the cooling of the PC. The cushioned  bottom of the laptop cooler assures comfort and doesn’t allow the heat to reach your feet when forced out of the laptop.

Keeps heat away

And now we get to the performances chapter: comfy? Yes, but than again, it should feel this way (the price isn’t exactly cheap). Does it really cool down the laptop heat? Yes, but than again, it should do that, too. And just the way Belkin used us, no on-off switch, no fan speed control (and the thing is that one may like his cooler run/to dissipate the heat depending on the amount of heat that there is, thus lowering the noise when the laptop is not hot).

So should you buy the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand? Well, if you own a laptop that is around 17’’ sized, if you tend to use your notebook on your lap, rather than on your desk, if you have bought other Belkin coolers (and you were fine with the cooling, but not with the comfort) and got attached to the brand… no matter the age, the sex or something like that, the stand does what the company promises, but for too much money!

The price for the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand is around 40 dollars on Amazon.com. Is it a good deal? No! For this money, one can certainly get a better cooler that doesn’t lack in terms of comfort and for a little bit more you can get a hot multimedia pad that cools and feels even more comfortable, too.

The new design is slimmer, slick looking and features the AirFlow plane wing design patented by Belkin. What this basically means is a curved profile that makes room under the laptop where the USB powered fan blows air towards the CPU/memory area of your portable. Cold air comes from beneath and gets out warmed up on the sides of your notebook. The included fan is not adjustable in speed, which is a petty, but at least is USB powered with a cable supplied by Belking that can be tucked away in a secret compartment when not in use. There are no distracting status LEDs.

Belkin says the F5L055 Laptop Cooling Pad will be available sometime in April, but you can already preorder it from Amazon for just 25$ (4$ cheaper than on Belkin’s website).

As construction goes, the case is made of plastic, while the top is from aluminum, not painted so that it keeps its silver looks. Two 80 mm fans are placed under and draw air from two special cut openings. Contact with table is made with the four feet placed at corners. A small switch adjusts speed of the two fans from Low to High so you can choose silence over cooling, depending on your usage scenario.

Nice shape for Antec Notebook Cooler

Power comes from a pass through USB cable stored in a small compartment under Antec Notebook Cooler so you can still use your USB gadgets, but remember that you won’t be able to power an external hard drive while also powering the two fans. A blue status LED let’s you know when the device is powered and when not.

From ergonomics point of view, there are no rubber stoppers to help make contact between the laptop and the cooling pad, as Antec relies on notebook’s own rubber feet to make contact. This is not a problem, mainly because rubber makes good contact with aluminum and the cooling pad is now inclined so there’s nothing to slip. Antec Notebook Cooler weights only 730 grams so it’s no burden to carry it around with you. Almost any size laptop will fit on it and two fans ensure good cooling even for hotter laptops like the lately Core i7 models.

It’s hard not to like the Antec Notebook Cooler, especially because it costs just 26$.

Evercook NP-501 comes in two colors

As of design there’s not much to say here, we have a plastic shell with some SciFi drawings around the two fans but it’s not what you could call stylish. I don’t thing this is an important feature to look for in a cooling stand, as the main function is not to look nice, especially if you use a big notebook that covers the laptop pad entirely. As a side note, the two fans suck air from beneath your laptop and expel it on the left and right side through 4 vent holes.

Being made from plastic there are also some advantages, like low weight: despite its big size, 68 x 43 x 27 cm, it only weights 779 grams. This makes it ideal if you travel a lot with your gaming laptop, to LAN parties and such. Both fans are powered via one of your laptop’s USB ports, which you’ll lose this way, but that’s hardly an issue these days.

Given the under 30$ price on Amazon, I can only recommend Evercool NP-501, either black or silver version.

Features

Being a product from a big cooling manufacturer the ZM-NC2000 comes with a speed adjustment controller that allows you to adjust the power supplied to the two fans, thus controlling noise and cooling. Both fans have the same specs: speed ranging from 1000 to 1500 RPM.

Black always looks good

The part of the cooling stand that makes contact with your laptop is made from aluminum and features a whooping 928 holes that let cool air sucked from both sides of the stand by fans to get where it’s needed. On both sides of the stand there is one USB port that makes it easy to connect other peripherals to your laptop, but one will be taken away as a USB cable, nicely hidden beneath a plastic door, is used to power the two fans. A status LED let’s you know if the system is On or Off (there’s a button for that too or you can unplug the USB cable).

Zalman ZM-NC2000 has a slim profile

The height of Zalman ZM-NC2000 can be adjusted just like in a keyboard, by raising two small legs from behind it. The laptop is held nicely in place by two rubber bands placed on the aluminum contact surface. You’re not limited to the size of screen and can safely use any kind of laptop you like. If you can hold it then the Zalman ZM-NC2000 can too.

Pricing and availability

Zalman is not a cheap manufacturer, and you feel the ZM-NC2000 in your pocket, as it currently sells for about 68$ on Amazon. Alternatively you can go for the ZM-NC1000 that sells for 48$ and is similar built. I guess Zalman is worth the money anyway as it doesn’t compere with the price you would have to pay for notebook repair due to damage caused by heat.

Lindy Adjustable Notebook Cooler

The fan of the Lindy Adjustable Notebook Cooler runs at 2300 RPM, fixed speed and is powered via one of you laptop’s USB ports. While the fan runs silent enough for our tastes, the fact that it’s not adjustable in speed and sits tool close to the bottom of the laptop means two things: you won’t be able to make it run slower if the laptop is cool enough and it can’t cool efficiently the bottom of your laptop, but just the part that sits directly over it.

Lindy Ajustable Notebook Cooler is a nice choice given it’s low price (~15 pounds) and wide compatibility range. We only wish it didn’t look that ordinary. We’ll update this post as soon as we’ll have a link to an online shop.

A nice cooling laptop stand

The construction is pretty simple: a large table with a cooler blowing up in the middle, a raised edge to keep the laptop from falling when the tablet is inclined thanks to the raising stand (a piece of plastic that can be bent into an U shape). Power for the cooler comes from an USB port on your laptop. What Belking should have done is fit a bigger fan with a lower spinning speed so what noise would go down and cooling capacity up. I’m not saying the Laptop Cooling Launge is bad, but it could’ve been better with minimum effort.

Another minus is the bottom part, made like the rest of the laptop pad from plastic. A cushion would have been nice, just like the one found on Logitech’s Speaker Lapdesk N700, but what you loose in comfort you get back in expenses, as the Belkin Laptop Cooling Launge sells for just 30$ on Amazon and makes a good combo with a Belkin travel surge protector.

Even with its small problems mentioned above the cooling stand performs admirably thanks to a special ergonomic design, and by that I mean a channel like opening on the top surface of the pad which helps guide hot air outside on the left and right part of the laptop, thus creating a flow of air that cools the bottom of the laptop. I know it’s good because I’ve tested one last year for a few hours in summer and it really made a difference.
