Exercising doesn’t help if you work sitting at a desk long hours
Believe it or not if you sit at a desk long hours it’s not good for your health, even if you exercise daily. That’s the conclusion of a recent report that made me rethink my strategy concerning working from home in front of the computer and balancing this sitting period with exercising, eating healthy and such.
Apparently it’s not enough to exercise, if you spend 7-8 hours all day sitting on a chair. The same goes for watching TV, so don’t cheat yourself into chinking this is all about work. The report does seem serious, trying to prevent things like risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and early death. The conclusion of the research is very simple: sitting for longer periods of time is not good for your health, period. And if you’re wondering what “long” means you won’t be happy to hear it’s anything over three hours.
There is also a simple solution to this problem and that is trying to stand up while working from time to time. Yeap, work on your computer standing up at least a few minutes per hours, because compared to sitting, when you stand up your body does a lot of things including tensing your leg muscles, back and shoulders. More on this worrying report can be found here. Take this seriously and don’t think you’re not exposed to those problems if you use a laptop desk stand. Sitting too long is bad for your health.
